Once again, Berlin-based Bio Company experienced growth in 2017 and it sees itself well positioned for the future. The company's first stores were launched in Berlin almost 20 years ago. For Georg Kaiser, co-founder and CEO at Bio Company, merely selling organic products was not enough. So, he insisted on offering products from the metropolitan region of Berlin-Brandenburg and built up a network of regional suppliers. For this CO₂ saving measure as an important part of the sustainability strategy, the company has been rewarded.

The German Dennree Group was able to close the year 2016 successfully. The balance sheet published shortly before Christmas shows a profit of almost 30 million euros (after tax). Sales rose by around ten percent. For 2017, only a low single-digit increase in sales is expected.

Amazon acquires Whole Foods Market

Friday June 16 Amazon and Whole Foods Market annouced that they have entered into a definitive merger agreement. Amazon will acquire Whole Foods Market for approximately $13.7 billion.


France: organic retail continues to expand

As last year, France is excelling with high growth rates in the organic sector. In terms of both land area and turnover, the increase is impressive. The expansion of the specialist wholefood trade in France continues unabated. In the first four months of 2017 (middle of December 2016 to middle of April 2017)  61 specialist organic stores and organic supermarkets were opened. The average retail area measured 335 m². Total turnover of the organic industry, including catering, is around 7 billion euros.


Japan: organic supermarket "Bio c’bon" has opened in Tokyo

"Bio c'Bon" is an organic supermarket from France. The first store in central Tokyo opened on the 8th of December. The shop offers fresh foods such as fruit vegetables and meat, mainly domestic organic JAS certified agricultural products, processed foods and beverages, such as wine and cheese, seasonings and confectionery as well as natural/organic non-food products, among them body care, cosmetics and supplies for babies and children are offered. The French chain plans to expand in Japan.


Denn’s: increase in turnover of more than 30 percent in 2015

At the end of February German retailer denn’s Biomarkt GmbH presented its end-of-year results for 2015. They show that the Dennree subsidiary generated turnover of nearly 305 million euros  with its then total of  217 stores.


German BioCompany grew more than 8%

In 2016 BioCompany increased compared to the previous year by 9 million euros (8.2%) to 145 million euros. The other companies of the BioCompany Group, Havelland Bio and Midgard Naturkost, had a revenue of around five million euros.
