"Alnatura is a social experiment"

Bees are buzzing and frogs are croaking in the grounds of the nature-based headquarters of Alnatura in Bickenbach (Hesse). And in the building belonging to one of the biggest organic companies in Germany there is much activity too. This where the  “working partnership“ develops ideas for new brand products, a 3D online shop and concepts for the store of the future. Founder Götz Rehn sees this collective activity as an “experiment on the way to a  social-organic model company“. 


France: significant organic growth across the board in 2015

The organic market in France has been growing steadily for years. Turnover in the whole organic sector has now reached €5.5bn (preliminary estimate for 2015), which equates to growth of 10% compared with 2014. The number of companies in the organic industry, from organic farmers, processors and wholesalers to retailers, has risen to 42,216, a pleasing expansion of 7.2%.

Bio Company in Berlin continues to grow

The Berlin organic supermarket chain and market leader of the region Berlin-Brandenburg Bio Company increased its turnover 2015 by 17.5% to €134m. The chain is planning to increase its network of stores in 2016 to over 50 and to expand its network of regional partner firms.

Poland’s biggest wholefood retailer, the Organic Farma Zdrowia Group, increased turnover in 2014 by 25 %, which equates to a 25 % rise in value from 52 million zloty (12.5 million euros) to over 65 million zloty (15.1 million euros). By implementing a franchise system, the company’s aim is to be operating 100 specialist wholefood stores avross the whole of Poland by the end of 2017.

The biggest wholefood retailer in Poland,  the Organic Farma Group, increased its turnover by 25 % in 2014. It grew from 52 million zloty (€12.5m) to over 65 million zloty (€15.1m), which equates to a gain of 25 %.

Even after 30 years since it was founded Alnatura has once again impressed us all with a record result: in the last financial year 2013/2014 ending on 30 September 2014, the company’s turnover came to €689m net. Compared with the year before, this translates into a rise of 16 %.

The Dutch organic market has more or less doubled since 2008, and in 2013 it passed the billion euro mark. The organic organisation Bionext estimates the value of turnover to be 1.07 billion euros. Around 1,500 certified organic farms are operating in the Netherlands and 1,700 companies are active in the manufacturing and trading sector.
