IFOAM Organic World Congress: global meeting of the movement

It was a global organic event in India last month. Almost 2,500 delegates from 121 countries plus more than 7,000 day visitors attended the 19th IFOAM Organic World Congress (OWC). More than 1,000 farmers joined the organic mega event in Delhi/ Greater Noida and discussed topics concerning agriculture innovations, techniques, trends, challenges, success stories and other key issues of the sector. The motto of the OWC was „An Organic World through an Organic India.“ Every fifth organic farmer in the world lives in India. Read the summary and watch a video with impressions and statements.

Parallel to the Natural Products Expo, the BIOFACH America – All Things Organic took place from 14th to 16th September 2017 in the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore, USA. As the organisers report, more than 1,500 organic exhibitors, among them 196 fully organic, and over 29,000 visitors came to the exhibition to exchange trends, information about new products and to learn more about the organic sector.

From 19th – 21st February 2018, the 18th International Conference on Organic Fruit Growing (Ecofruit) will take place at the University of Hohenheim in Germany. Among others organized by Foeko e.V., Ecofruit aims at bringing together European researchers and consultants working on topics related to organic fruit growing.

OWC: biggest organic farming event on the planet

The Organic World Congress (OWC) is a global forum for organic farming and organic agriculture. It is coming to India for the first time in 40 years and will take place from 9-11 November 2017 Greater Noida, New Delhi. The event will play a critical role in strengthening the world organic farming movement and tilting India’s agricultural. According to the organizers the OWC will welcome around 3,000 delegates from 110 countries. As a parallel event BioFach India together with India Organic Trade Fair will take place at the same venue.


International Green Week 2018 in Berlin

Monsanto in trouble

Monsanto is in trouble for many reasons. Among others, the authorization of Monsanto’s flagship Roundup and its ingredient glyphosate is expiring in the EU by the end of this year. More and more weeds are resistant to Roundup. Monsanto’s ‘solution’ to this problem, another very toxic herbicide Dicamba, turns out to be a complete failure. The Monsanto Tribunal last fall in The Hague and court cases have been exposing the way Monsanto works, and this helps to inspire others to show the true cost of Monsanto’s business. Films and books were released too.

The new Organic Regulation – status quo and outlook

At the IFOAM EU Organic Congress in Tallinn representatives of the EU and of the organic sector discussed pro and contra of the new European Organic Regulation (video). After a record time of more than three years and 18 trilogues Regulation probably will be launched in June 2020, although neither the Council and Commission nor the Parliament and the stakeholders of the organic sector are fully satisfied with the compromise.

IFOAM EU Congress: Roadmap for making Europe more organic

IFOAM EU members and guests from the organic industry as well as policymakers met for the 11th European Organic Congress (EOC) in the Estonian capital Tallinn from 5 - 6 September. The main topics of the first day were the Common European Agricultural Policy (CAP) and the possibilities to implement the ambitious goal of IFOAM EU to reach 50% European agricultural land managed according to organic principles by 2030 (Organic Vision 2030).
