In 2017, the organic sector achieved sales of over 10 billion euros for the first time. This was announced by Peter Röhrig, Managing Director of the Bund Ökologische Lebensmittelwirtschaft (BÖLW, Engl. Association Organic Food Industry), on the occasion of the annual press conference of the organic sector at the start of this year's BIOFACH in Nuremberg.


Naturland with record increase of 25% in farmers and area

The Germany based international organic association Naturland has publishing excellent figures at BioFach: currently there are 54,000 farmers in 52 countries the world over operating in compliance with the Naturland standards. This is 26.4% more than a year ago.

The European Union is the world's second largest single market for organic products after the United States.In 2016, organic retail sales in Europe rose by 11.4 percent to 33.5 billion euros, while organic sales in the EU member states significantly exceeded the 30 billion euro mark and reached 30.7 billion euros. The figures were traditionally compiled by the Research Institute for Organic Agriculture (FiBL), the Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI) and partners and presented at the Biofach.

A booming organic sector: more farmers, more land and a growing market. This is the résumé of the 19th edition of „The World of Organic Agriculture“. The Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) and IFOAM – Organics International launched  the statistical yearbook at Biofach  2018 in Nuremberg. This comprehensive collection of the latest available data (2016) on organic agriculture worldwide contains data on area, operators, and retail sales: 57.8 million hectares of organic agricultural land – organic market grows to almost 90 billion US Dollars.

48% of British foods contain pesticide residue

A report analysing 3,448 samples of British produce has found traces of pesticides on 48 per cent of them. The data was released by the Expert Committee on Pesticide Residues in Food (PRiF) as part of their annual report.

It was a global organic event in India last month. Almost 2,500 delegates from 121 countries plus more than 7,000 day visitors attended the 19th IFOAM Organic World Congress (OWC). More than 1,000 farmers joined the organic mega event in Delhi/ Greater Noida and discussed topics concerning agriculture innovations, techniques, trends, challenges, success stories and other key issues of the sector.
