The Germany based international organic association Naturland has publishing excellent figures at BioFach: currently there are 54,000 farmers in 52 countries the world over operating in compliance with the Naturland standards. This is 26.4% more than a year ago.

The agricultural area farmed has also increased by 23.8% to almost 343,000 hectares. Add to this the 54,000 hectares of organic forestry and the area increases to almost 400,000 hectares of land managed to the Naturland standards. In Germany, Naturland was mainly able to record an above-average increase in the number of its member farms. In 2017 a total of 321 farms made the decision to convert to compliance with the Naturland standards, an increase of 10.3%.

According to figures provided by the German Federation of the Organic Food Industry, BÖLW, the average growth in the number of farms which are members of organic associations was 6.1%, and 7.5% if farms managed according to the EU standards are included. In total, 3,448 farms throughout Germany are operating in compliance with the Naturland standards on an area of over 181,000 hectares. The growth in the area runs parallel with the increase in the number of Naturland farms (10%).

The global figure: 11,000 new Naturland farmers and an increase of 44% in the area farmed

Growth was even more noticeable beyond Germany’s borders. In this case a good 50,000 hectares was added to the area farmed, an increase of 44.3%! Besides this, Naturland is now represented in five new countries for the first time with members in Brazil, Kazakhstan, Portugal, Senegal and Hungary.

The number of farmers operating in compliance with the Naturland standards beyond Germany’s borders increased by a good 11,000. This figure mainly covers smallholders who belong to one of the 117 Naturland co-operatives or producers’ associations. The year before, a total of 23 new producers’ associations joined Naturland, and some Naturland co-operatives which already existed were successful in persuading many new smallholders to convert to organic agriculture.
