US Aquaculture Standards still in Progress
by Redaktion (comments: 0)
One year ago, the US Agriculture Department introduced a plan for organic aquaculture standards. Now the White House Office of Management and Budget has calculated that it will presumably take double time to pass the standard.
Europe and Canada already have organic aquaculture standards, but the enforcement proofs difficult in the US as it is hard to set up controls for contaminants moving freely through water.
George Lockwood, chairman of an aquaculture task-force for the National Organic Standards Board thinks according to Politico, that there could be a movement towards only allowing closed-up loop systems, which are expensive and only suitable for certain species. He argues, that an organic aquaculture standard should allow a variety of fishing methods.
