UK: Chocolate, a leading fair trade product

Since the Fairtrade label has been established about two decades ago, chocolate has developed to the most successful product, carrying the label. Mars, Cadbury’s and Nestle, three of the biggest chocolate-producers, have all launched at least one Fairtrade-brand in the UK.
“Fairtrade is different from other certification schemes because its aim has always been to empower producers, rather than being a business risk-management tool,” Sophi Tranchell, managing director of Divine Chocolate, told The Guardian. “Historically, procurement management was always about buying as cheaply as possible. The fact that buyers are now considering other factors is quite impressive,” she says.
