Titanium dioxide: a dangerous substance?
by Editor (comments: 0)
The discussion around nanoparticles and their effect is currently somewhat overshadowed by other issues, but researchers are trying to bring more transparency to the impact of various nanomaterials.
For example, French scientists have examined the effects of the whitening agent titanium dioxide, that contains some nanoparticles. Their results showed that some of the rats fed with high doses of the additive developed tumours in the intestines. The researchers also established that this substance damages the immune system and causes inflammation of the bowel.
Titanium dioxide E 171 is not permitted in organic food but it is used as mineral sun protection in natural cosmetics. When used in this way the particles remain on the surface of the skin and are not ingested.
