Sustainable Food Awards - winners announced

At the end of the first conference day the inaugural Sustainable Food Awards reception was hosted at the Mövenpick Hotel Amsterdam City Centre on 7th June 2018.
For the first Sustainable Food Awards in each of the five categories the winner and the runner-up were announced by Amarjit Sahota and the Ecovia Intelligence team. The finalist have been announced last week. The new Award aims to give recognition to operators who are helping build a sustainable food industry, informs Ecovia. The categories are the categories are wide-ranging from ingredients and products to packaging; sustainability pioneers and sustainable leadership were honored too.
The winners of the categories are:
New Sustainable Product:
Winner: Bogawantalawa Tea Estates, Uncompensated Carbon Neutral Teas (Sri Lanka). Produced in the Golden Valley of Ceylon, they are the first certified climate-neutral teas that are marketed in European retailers.

Runner-up: Coop Insect-Based Food Products (Switzerland). The Swiss supermarket chain introduced insect burgers, balls, and bars last autumn; the products provide a sustainable alternative to conventional meat-based products.

Winner: EOSTA Natural Branding (the Netherlands). Laser technology is used to mark organic fruits and vegetables. The technique replaces plastic packaging, saving many thousand tonnes of CO2 emissions in its first year.
Runner-up: Coop Multi-Bag, (Switzerland) is made from sustainable wood-based material, it is as an alternative to plastic bags commonly used to pack food products. Sirane Earthpouch (UK) was the other finalist.
Sustainable Ingredient:
Winner: Agrasys with Tritordeum cereal (Spain). Tritordeum is a new natural cereal produced by a combination of durum wheat and a wild barley. Made by cross-breeding (and not GMO), the grain is being used in flour, bread, biscuits, pasta and related products.

Runner-up: Aliet Green with Organic Coconut Sugar (Indonesia) helps to empower female growers in Yogyakarta, Indonesia with organic coconut sugar.
Sustainability Pioneer:
Winner: Straus Family Creamery (USA). Under the leadership of Albert Straus, the enterprise has pioneered organic dairy farming in California, and is now undertaking climate-friendly production methods.

Runner-up: Lotus Foods (USA) is promoting System of Rice Intensification (SRI). The company is encouraging biodiversity by getting growers in developing countries to produce organic and wild varieties of rice.
Sustainable Leadership:
Winner: Nature's Path Foods (Canada) is a pioneer in the production of organic breakfast cereals, the company is investing to become climate-neutral, zero-waste and socially responsible.
Runner-up: Palsgaard (Denmark) is specialising in emulsifier production, the company is setting up carbon-neutral sites across the globe and undertaking sustainability in its supply chains.
