Recently, the Egyptian initiative SEKEM has published its tenth sustainability report. This report depicts SEKEM’s efforts for a sustainable development in areas such as economy, ecology, culture and society.

This year, SEKEM especially elaborates on purposes for sustainable development published in the beginning of 2016 by the United Nations as a worldwide target for 2030. SEKEM outlines how the initiative deals with and actively promotes all seventeen aims for already forty years.

Further essential developments of the SEKEM-group in 2016 according to the report:

  • Growth despite of the difficult economic situation in the country
  • Increase of organic agriculture in Egypt
  • Less water used, reduced CO2 emissions
  • Reinforcement of communities
  • Education remains a central objective

Even though, only 38 per cent of the targeted objectives were accomplished, the SEKEM group is tuned positively about the outcomes of the report as many purposes have almost been accomplished. Furthermore, the overall preconditions in Egypt have been tough due to a sudden and strong devaluation of the Egyptian pound, certainly in the second half of 2016.
