Organic cotton from India designed in New York

India is an important supplier of organic cotton. The organic enterprise Suminter India Organics® runs a fair trade organic cotton project with 5,500 farmers in the state of Gujarat, India.

In partnership with Suminter India Organics®, the New York based brand Satva has designed yoga and sports wear called “athleisurewear” out of the organic cotton produced in India. “We consider our impact at every step towards building a holistic, ethical and harmonious ecosystem that satisfies customers, supports the economic development of impoverished farming communities, and improves the global environment”, explains Satvaliving.com.

An example for the initiative Suminter and Satva take, is to improve women’s educational opportunities in the rural communities in Kerala and Gujarat. Together, Suminter and Satva launched Disha, an initiative that sponsors the education of young girls in villages where organic cotton is cultivated for Satva garments.
