On Tuesday evening, the new documentary movie „Le Roundup face à ses juges” (Roundup, the trial) by French movie maker and book author Marie-Monique Robin (The World According to Monsanto, 2008) has been screened on Arte in French and German (Roundup, der Prozess).

The 90-minute movie documents the scandal involving the pesticide Roundup® and its controversial agent glyphosate made by US-concern Monsanto. The final decision on the re-authorization of glyphosate within the EU will be rendered in the European Parliament until the end of this year.

In 2015, forty years after the market introduction of Roundup, glyphosate has been classified as being probably carcinogenic by the UN-authority IARC. Many independent studies and investigations prove the pesticide’s risks. Last autumn, the International Monsanto Tribunal took place in The Hague. Persons affected and aggrieved by the toxic agent as well as scientists from allover the world gave testimonies as witnesses in the tribunal. Recordings from the symbolic trial, in which Monsanto has been accused of ecocide and felonies against humanity, are an essential part of the movie.

With shocking pictures, the movie reveals disastrous consequences of the usage of glyphosate, which is not only carcinogenic and hormonally active, but also an antibiotic agent that sequesters trace minerals with the most severe consequences for humankind, animals and the environment.

A subsequent interview with Marie-Monique Robin is now available Arte’s media library too. Within the interview, Robin talks about the political conflict situation of the issue and accuses the German Federal Institute for risk assessment (BfR) among others of “scientific fraud”.
