A merger of 23 counties and eleven municipalities in the metropolitan region of Nuremberg has won the title "fairtrade region". The area has been awarded at a side event of BioFach.
Carrying the Fairtrade seal for 25 years now, the German Transfair association, handed over the label to Peter Pluschke, Nuremberg Environment Referee and Managing Director of the Climate Protection and Sustainable Development Forum in the metropolitan region. At the award ceremony in the Nuremberg Exhibition Center, Transfair CEO Dieter Overath said "in this region, the fair metropolitan region is a role model."
Peter Pluschke emphasized that fair conditions also benefit farmers and companies in the region, and that, in addition to the worldwide promotion of fair production conditions, is an important aspect.
To receive the award, five criteria must be met. These include the official decision to support fair trade, as well as a wide range of Fairtrade products in local shops, but also in schools and clubs. In the metropolitan region, 524 retailers, 221 catering establishments and 166 public institutions currently offer corresponding products.
