Italy: rising turnover of organic fruit and vegetables

In 2016, per capita consumption of fruit and vegetables in Italy was 152 kg. Around 9 million tonnes were sold, with consumers opting increasingly for organic fruit and vegetables.
According to information from the Italian economic institute Nomisma, compared with 2016, turnover in the retail food trade rose from January to March 2017 by 28 % to 147 million euros. During the same period this year organic fruit and vegetables as a proportion of total sales was 9%.
Around 60 % of the Italian households surveyed bought organic fruit and vegetables at least once during 2016. Fruit and vegetables account for 11 % of organic turnover in supermarkets in Italy.
