India: organic market in Kolkatta

The government launched its first market for organic products in the city of Kolkata. It also will support a project for organic roof top gardens.

The market is set at a central place and sells only organic food and products. "One of the main objectives is to support and promote the farmers who are doing organic farming and bring them under one roof," said an official. The supply of organic products is still low in India although there a several organic shops and also online delivery in Kolkata.

In the last five years the number of organic food stores in the city has grown significantly. Departmental stores, stores like Fabindia as well as specialized organic fruits and vegetables have opened and offer organic products. 

The New Town Kolkata Development Authority will also launch a pilot project on roof-top green organic farming in the township.
