HelloFresh acquires Green Chef

Green Chef, a US meal kit company, will be taken over by the German Rocket-Internet-Venture HelloFresh. According to the German online magazine ngin-food, the purchase is expected to be completed in the second quarter, but HelloFresh will not disclose the takeover amount.

Last year, sales of the Berlin-based start-up amounted to around 905 billion euros. As HelloFresh co-founder and CEO Dominik Richter said, 2017 has been the most successful year since the company's foundation in 2011. In order to further increase growth, the company plans to expand its product range. A first measure in this direction is the takeover of US competitor Green Chef, which HelloFresh announced in March. Founded in 2014, Green Chef ships its organic cooking boxes nationwide. Furthermore, it employs 600 people and has two production centres. The Boulder-based meal kit company offers vegan, gluten-free, ketogenic and paleo recipes. Founder Michael Joseph commented on the takeover: “We were the first certified, organic and gluten-free meal kit company in the U.S., an important distinction to consumers who are committed to eating organically or are sensitive to gluten. With HelloFresh, we will only further amplify our mission to give consumers across the country a simple way to eat and live healthier”.

According to ngin-food, Richter could not say whether the Green Chef offer would also be available outside of America in the future.
