Edible drinking straws in Aldi shelves

From 2021 on, plastic drinking straws will be banned in the EU. Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd will start selling the world’s first edible straws from the start-up company Wisefood in just a few days.

With the accelerator programme TechFounders, Aldi supported three start-ups in their development of sustainable packaging solutions and products. With the “Superhalm” (engl: super straw), they are now introducing the first product to the more than 4,200 Aldi stores. The super straw will be available starting December 20^th.

The super straw

• Is exclusively produced from renewable raw materials (cereals, apple fibres, stevia and citric acid). All products are “Made in Germany”.
• Is edible – vegan and lactose-free. The straw does not give off any taste to the drink while used. When eaten, it tastes crispy and slightly sweet.
• The straw lasts about an hour in water or juices – even up to two hours in alcoholic cold drinks. The super straw can also be used for warm drinks such as tea or coffee.
• Is available as a campaign item at a price of 2.99 Euro a package. One package contains 30 straws.
