Ecover and Method acquired by S.C Johnson

by Editor (comments: 1)

The US corporation SC Johnson & sons, one of the world's leading manufacturers of household cleaning products, signed an agreement to acquire the biobased cleaning products companies Ecover (Belgium) and Method (USA).

Besides cleaning products SC Johnson & sons, a family company since 1886, also offers products for air care, home storage, shoe care, personal care and pest control, as well as professional products. S.C. Jphnson employes around 12.000 people worldwide.

Ecover was founded in 1980 by Frans Bogaerts in Belgium to create phosphate-free cleaning products to reduce the environmental impact of cleaning agents. In the early 1990s after financial problems the company was restructured by Gunter Pauli and through the Danish investor Jørgen Philip-Sørensen (Skagen). Ecover then was part of the Skagen Conscience Capital, a global organisation.

In 2012 Ecover bought Method Products, a San Francisco (USA) headquartered manufacturer of biodegradable natural cleaning supplies to assist its entry of the North American market. According to Wikipedia the new group had annual revenues of $200 million at that time and were the world’s largest green cleaning products company by sales. The two consumer brands from People Against Dirty, are a B-Corp and pioneer in ‘planet-friendly’ home products are well known for their use of naturally derived, biodegradable ingredients and responsible packaging.

The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals in the U.S., U.K. and Germany, and other customary closing conditions.
