Brazil: Green Rio gathers representatives of the Green Economy

On May 24, 25 and 26, the seventh edition of Green Rio/Green Latin America will take place at Marina da Glória venue in Rio de Janeiro. The event will bring together exhibitors and speakers from the organic and sustainable sector as well as representatives of the Green Economy.

Since 2012, Green Rio has been been established as the business platform for the Green Economy, the organic and sustainable sector. In addition to meeting producers committed to healthy eating and sustainable development, the public visiting Green Rio 2018, will have access to the Green Rio Conference with speakers from Brazil and other countries.

Green Rio 2017 consolidates its position as an international event

Green Rio has been consolidating its position as an international event. The 2017 edition, with the participation of Germany, France, Entrepreneurial Council for Latin America (CEAL) and Banco Centroamericano de Integración Económica (Central American Economic Integration Bank) is an indicator of this fact.

A total of 2873 people and 74 exhibitors were present at Green Rio/Green Latin America 2017, held at the Glória Marina, Rio de Janeiro. Visitors and exhibitors from twelve countries, twice the number of nations in relation to 2016, represented a rise of about 10% in the number of participants in comparison with the previous edition.

Bioeconomy and cooperatives

Bioeconomy was an overarching theme at Green Rio 2017, and Roberto Rodrigues, former Agriculture Minister, an Ambassador for Cooperatives at the FAO and the Coordinator of the Agribusiness Center at the Getúlio Vargas Foundation, gave the opening address for the event to a packed auditorium. Roberto Rodrigues spoke about Brazil’s privileged position in relation to the possibilities of the new Bioeconomy market. “Its potential is related to competitive and sustainable agricultural production, abundant natural resources, biodiversity, advanced production of renewable fuels, and very dynamic biotechnology, especially in the agricultural area.” With regard to the cooperatives’ role in the bioeconomy, Roberto Rodrigues pointed out that:

“50 million Brazilians, including their families, are directly connected with one of the 6,600 cooperatives in Brazil. 361,000 professionals currently work at cooperatives. 50% of the Brazilian agricultural production has some connection with a cooperative. The cooperative movement is responsible for almost 11% of the Brazilian agricultural GDP (gross domestic product).”
