Soil Association received £ 17 million lottery grant

The award of £ 17 million (€ 25 million) was a part of series of new grants from the National lottery, designed to improve wellbeing, to make people more physically active and to encourage children, parents and the community to eat more healthily. The partnership of Food for Life will use their grant to bring healthy eating, cooking, farming and food growing to school children and their families. 180 Food for Life schools in various communities in England will be set up. The schemes aim to change the diets and lives of more than 150,000 people in the country by delivering cooking skills to school children and their parents and offering farmers secure markets for local, seasonal and sustainable food.

Peter Melchett of the Soil Association appreciated the award since it gave a boost to delivering healthy eating, reviving food culture and supporting sustainable farming. There was little hope for health and the global climate if children grew up unable to identify a carrot and thought food started life in the supermarket, he stated. The award would influence children and their parents as well as the whole food-chain.
