The organic vineyard Richmond Plains, based in Nelson, New Zealand, has just won the first gold medals ever for organic and biodynamic wines, awarded by the Hong Kong International Wine Challenge. The gold medals went to Richmond Plains Sauvignon Blanc 2010 and Richmond Plains Chardonnay 2009. The Sauvignon Blanc 2010 has gooseberry, passionfruit, lime and citrus aromas and flavours with a long zesty finish. The Chardonnay 2009 is fragrant and fruity, displaying ripe peach, nectarine with a hint of nutty characters. The winery has also won silver medals for their two other entries at this show, Richmond Plains Nelson Pinot Noir 2010 and Richmond Plains Nelson Blanc de Noir 2010, Richmond Plains reports.

Lars Jensen (see picture below), who owns the winery with his wife, Sam, says the results are exceptionally pleasing, coming from a very respected international wine competition in the world’s fastest growing wine market. “Our philosophy at Richmond Plains is to produce delicious wine – while truly working with nature. By carefully growing and nurturing our vines using natural, organic and biodynamic methods and harnessing all that nature has to offer, we can truly express the vineyard's character or terroir in our wines.”

Richmond Plains Sauvignon Blanc 2010 has also been awarded the inaugural Best of Show Organic & Biodynamic trophy at Asia’s most prestigious wine competition. On top of this, the wine also won a gold medal as Gentlemen’s Favourite, where the male judges award their preferred wines over all categories. “This proves our wine not only compares well to other organic wines, but excelled compared to all wines in the show,” says Lars Jensen.

Established in 1991 and exclusively organic since inception, their small family vineyard in Nelson is organic and biodynamic – the first New Zealand winery to achieve both certifications. Richmond Plains produced New Zealand’s first ever Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Blanc de Noir from certified organic and biodynamic grapes. The pioneering award winners are sold via specialty wine shops and the Richmond Plains cellar door. Outside New Zealand, the wine is sold to the UK, Sweden, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Germany, Japan, China, Australia, the USA, and to Singapore, and can also be bought from Peter Riegel
