Price premium of organics on GM TV

The "Which? magazine" has surveyed apples, eggs, butter, carrots, cherry tomatoes, milk, chocolate, potatoes, tea bags, chicken and chicken breasts to find out about the price premium on organic products, reported GM TV, a breakfast show in Great Britain. The researchers bought eleven supermarket own-brand groceries in organic and standard versions, and in economy versions when possible. They worked out the average price per item across Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose. The organic shopping basket of eleven goods cost an average £ 22.54, compared with the supermarket own-brand versions at £ 17.46.

A whole chicken, for example, cost £ 2.75 for the supermarket economy version, a free range chicken cost £ 5.51 and organic free range came to £ 6.87. Six economy eggs came to 65 p compared with £ 1.44 for the organic version, two pints of organic milk came to 82p on average compared with 64 p for standard. 80 economy tea bags cost 34 p at the cheapest, and £ 1.66 as organic product.

But "Which? magazine" also found out it was not always more expensive to buy organics. Cherry tomatoes in organic versions at Waitrose and Sainsbury’s, for example, were cheaper than the non-organic version.
