Organic cotton production shows enormous growth

The growing demand from the apparel, home product and personal care industries has driven the growth in production and sales of organic cotton over the last year. Organic Exchange’s data, which has just been published, revealed that the amount of organic cotton produced globally rose by 53 % from 2005/6 to 2006/7, reports just-style.com.

According to the Organic Exchange “Organic Farm and Fiber Report 2007”, almost 58,000 tonnes of organic cotton were produced in 24 countries on all arable continents. In an earlier report, the US-based organisation has forecasted that global sales of organic cotton would grow to $ 2.6 billion (€1.8 billion) by the end of 2008.

Turkey, India and China are leading the organic cotton production, with 45 % of organic cotton being grown in the Middle East.
