Organic Bouquet – America’s eco-florist

by Redaktion (comments: 0)

Organic Bouquet has been selling fresh and sustainably grown flowers from partner farms to customers all over the United States of America since 2001. The company has played a key role in the transformation of the floral industry by promoting and living up to high social and environmental standards. Much emphasis is placed on eco-friendly floral packaging and on a carbon offset program. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, in 2004 the U.S. market for all flowers and plants was worth 19.5 billion dollars. Sales of organic flowers in the U.S. grew to 16 million dollars in 2005, an estimated 50 % growth from 2003 (Organic Trade Association). Sales are expected to grow at a rate of 50 % annually through 2015.

Organic Bouquet’s offer includes roses, mixed flowers, lilies, tulips, gerberas, Flowers for Good and floral tools. A range of organic chocolates, cookies and truffles is also available. Tangerine bonsais, mini rosemary bushes, Japanese maple bonsais, Tuscan olive trees, tree fern root pots and sapling trios are offered, as well as wreaths and swags. The company’s aim is selling luxury eco-products at economical prices - they want their environmentally and socially responsible products to be affordable for everyone. Flowers and gifts are available for special occasions like Earth Day, Mother’s Day or weddings.

OrganicBouquet11Organic Bouquet has partners - artisans and growers - who adhere to rigorous U.S. and international standards of sustainability. Products are obtained from companies providing safe and just working conditions and a living wage, and from artisans and farmers who reinvest in their communities and take pride in their craftsmanship. Organic Bouquet works with smaller growers of higher end specialty products and with larger growers of common varieties that are conducive to production on a larger scale. Their primary mission is to protect the planet and improve farm worker safety by eliminating the use of large quantities of toxic pesticides in agriculture. A necessary step in this process has been to encourage major flower growers to initiate organic production.

Eco-friendly practices are applied whenever possible by using recycled, recyclable, tree-free, biodegradable, compostable, wild-crafted, and/or all-natural materials. Renewable or efficient energy is used, and minimal toxic chemicals are applied. Packaging is made from recycled and recyclable materials. Boxes are printed with water-based ink, which is non-toxic and low in volatile organic compounds. The industry-leading design sets a new standard by ensuring that the flowers remain well protected in transit while having a minimal impact on the planet. Organic Bouquet is currently in the process of converting all of their bouquet sleeves and other plastic bags to biodegradable PLA, an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional plastic sleeves. Polyactide originates from field corn, a 100% renewable resource.

While most traditional florists use a number of plastic water tubes to keep each individual flower stem hydrated during transport, Organic Bouquet uses a single sponge-like casing for each bouquet, creating significantly less waste than their plastic vial counterparts. All of their inserts and gift cards are printed on recycled or recyclable materials using soy-based inks. The use of soy ink reduces the amount of air pollution released during printing, as soy is naturally low in volatile organic compounds. Unlike standard petroleum inks, it also degrades completely, making the recycling process more efficient. Like their flowers, their best-selling tinted glass vase arrives with a green pedigree – it is made from 100% recycled glass.

Organic Bouquet has formed a partnership with Carbonfund.org to initiate a carbon offset program that mitigates greenhouse gases generated from shipping the flowers and gifts. Each time a product is purchased from Organic Bouquet, the amount of carbon emissions from that shipment is offset by injecting funds into the Nicaragua Reforestation Project - a project which will sequester more than 150,000 tons of CO2 over a 40 year lifetime through reforesting 340 hectares of abandoned pastureland with native tree species.

The Flowers for Good program was developed as an extension of Organic Bouquet's core mission by providing ways to support charitable causes through everyday gift-giving purchases. To date, the program has helped to raise over a quarter of a million US $ for its non-profit partners. In an effort to create online connections and community, Organic Bouquet share their stories and always aim at improvement. All products are made without animal testing or cruelty and are either vegetarian or vegan. The company is a member of CO-OP America, the premier green business network in the United States. The highest social and environmental product standards are prescribed by the certifying agencies USDA certified Organic, Veriflora certified sustainable, Demeter certified Biodynamic, Fair Trade, Smart Certified and Green-e.

Veriflora is America’s first comprehensive sustainability certification program for the floral and potted plant industries. It guarantees that flowers and potted plants have been produced in an environmentally and socially responsible manner and meet the highest standards for freshness. The certification program establishes procedures for verifying agricultural production and handling practices, from soil preparation and seed planting to production, harvest and post-harvest distribution. The program is administered by Scientific Certification Systems (SCS), a leader in the development of third party certification services and standards. To be certified, growers and handlers must meet rigorous performance criteria in key areas like sustainable crop production, ecosystem protection, resource conservation and energy efficiency, integrated waste management, fair labor practices, community benefits and product quality.

Completing their goal of planting a billion trees over the next seven years will help bring the Atlantic Forest, one of the world’s most endangered tropical forests, back from the brink. The reforestation effort will also play a key role in fighting global warming by removing 10 million tons of CO2 from the atmosphere every year
