Global registry operator Afilias has announced that the top-level domain .organic is now open for registration. “Afilias is proud to introduce this valuable addition to the top level domain space,” said Roland LaPlante, Chief Marketing Officer at Afilias. “Authentic organic organizations can now rise above the dotcom confusion with an Internet address that sets them apart as organic and enables consumers to more easily find them.” To get an .organic domain, one can register at any .organic authorized registrar.

Web addresses using .organic are only available to verifiably organic farmers, producers, manufacturers, co-packers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers and official organic certifiers. Eligibility also extends to other organic-oriented entities such as restaurants and trade organizations that may not be certified but can meet special .organic criteria tailored to their role in the community. The complete eligibility requirements are available here

The first organic brands are participating in the .organic domain pioneer program and plan to launch .organic sites soon. These include the Rodale Institute, a nonprofit dedicated to pioneering organic farming through research and outreach and Stonyfield, a leading maker of organic yogurts and dairy products. Applegate, a producer of high-quality natural and organic hot dogs, bacon, sausages, deli meats, cheese and frozen products is also participating, just like Bitsy's Brainfood, a line of smart snacks and resources that nurture kids. Another company to use .organic is NibMor, a producer of dark chocolate products, and OMRI, the Organic Materials Review Institute is preparing a site at OMRI.organic.
