Going Organic and Feeding the Masses

by Redaktion (comments: 0)

According to information provided to the U.N. by expert researchers, organic food, which has been regarded as a small, limited market and an option only for wealthy consumers, can now be looked at in a new light. They say that organic agriculture could not only improve our widespread environment, but also aid us in dealing with the problem of severe hunger in the world.

Decreases in the yield of crops in conventional agriculture seem to remedy their own losses over time and allow other agricultural benefits to take place. This factor has blocked out the voice of the organic movement a great deal when meetings on dealing with world hunger are happening.

Researchers in Denmark found, however, that there would not be any serious negative effect on food security for sub-Saharan Africa if 50 % of agricultural land in the food exporting regions of Europe and North America were converted to organic by 2020. While total food production would drop, the amount per crop would be much less than previously assumed, and the drop in world food prices that resulted could be mitigated by improvements in the land and other benefits, the study found.
