GMO Contamination in UK Organics

by Redaktion (comments: 0)

UK environment minister David Miliband has been pleaded with to disallow the genetic modification of organic food. These plees have come from representatives of the UK organic sector.

The current limit for the contamination of organic food by GMOs is 0.1 %. Seventy organic businesses have arranged for a delegation in which they will urge that that percentage not be increased to 0.9.

The government of the UK, says Philippa Jones, is suggesting that the percentage be raised and also that only food with a GMO concentration of more than 0.9 % should have the need of the “contains GMOs” title. On the other hand, the current percentage of contamination which would merit an organic label would be any food containing less than 0.1 %.

According to the chair of the Food and Drink Federation’s organic group, Alex Smith, one primary reason organic food is purchased by consumers is so they can avoid eating any GMOs. He adds that there is ample evidence to back this.
