European Fair Trade Fair in France

by Redaktion (comments: 0)

The first edition of Fair Trade in Europe, which took place in Lyon-Villeurbanne (France) mobilised professionals stakeholders and the general public in favour of Fair Trade. 1,200 professional visitors gathered at the fair - corporate representatives, works councils and local communities could develop their contacts with Fair Trade suppliers, importers, producers, NGOs and educational organisations. On the round tables, they could discuss Fair public procurement, Fair Trade cotton , the impact of Fair Trade on Southern countries, education on responsible consumption, Fair Trade and sea transport.

The general public was able to discover the variety of Fair Trade products which are now available. Visitors could obtain information from various organisations and attend conferences and workshops on topics such as Fair tourism, solidarity finances and Fair Trade campaigns. Visitors also appreciated proposed activities such as chocolate processing, T-shirt printing or games for children.

The Innovation Trophy of Fair Trade in Europe, organised by Equi’Sol, rewarded two exhibitors for their initiatives in Europe: Miel Maya Honing, a Belgian NGO, for its educational project (www.fair-kids.org), and Agrofair, for the development of its Fair Trade, exotic fresh fruit supply chain. The European Award for Professional Commitment to Fair Trade, organised by Signaléthique, was awarded to three organisations.

The Fair Trade in Europe’s partners are now working at the second edition. Almost all participants noticed the quality of atmosphere and contacts during this first fair. But various feedbacks will help to improve the fair in future – more targeted visitors, a better venue, more exhibitors, a clearer separation between the professional area and the one aimed at the general public.
