Canada: World’s largest Brownie at McGill University

On 26 August 2014, Quebec’s first and only Fair Trade Campus, McGill University, hosted McGill à la carte. The Student Housing and Hospitality Services Food Show included 27 exhibitors and a 1,590 kg Fairtrade brownie. A 20 person team had assembled the 9.1 x 4.6 meter brownie (see pictures). Fairtrade certified ingredients were used, including 650 kg of sugar, 160 kg of cocoa powder and 190 kg of organic dark chocolate. The University’s own hens supplied more than 8,640 local eggs.

About 19,000 brownie portions were served. Participants circulated in limited edition t-shirts stating “I’ve taken a bite out of the World’s Largest Fairtrade Brownie“ and matching stickers directed to the hashtag #FairtradeBrownie. More information can be found here.

A further upcoming event from Fairtrade Canada are the Canadian Fairtrade Awards that recognize exceptional Fairtrade supporters, partners and allies, including retailers, traders, towns and campuses. Categories include: retailer, licensee, trader, campus, and town of the year, as well as excellence in consumer education, in merchandising, and in public outreach, as well as Fairtrade All Stars.
