USA: GMO labeling becomes national subject

by Redaktion (comments: 0)

After Vermont has passed its labeling bill in April 2014, it was signed by Gov. Peter Shumlin on 8 May 2014. The bill has therefore become law and companies will have to label products containing GMOs beginning in July 2016. This move has been largely welcomed by GMO opponents.

Various bioengineering companies, however, rather support proposed federal legislation like H.R.4432 – Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act of 2014 that was introduced to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on 9 April 2014. This bill – if passed – would prevent individual states from passing GMO labeling laws and give the FDA sole authority to regulate this law.
