Starting Dot wins “.bio” domain

On 13 February 2014, IFOAM's partner Starting Dot was offered a contract by ICANN (International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) to enable Starting Dot to administer the new global top-level domain “.bio”. Starting Dot has partnered with IFOAM to ensure that “.bio” is of benefit to the organic movement, and protects and advances the interests of all kinds of organic operations in line with the principles of organic agriculture.

The internet extension “.bio” will become available in the near future as an alternative to more typical extensions like ".com" or ".net", and allows companies and organizations to find a new space for their name in an internet url. IFOAM heads the Policy Advisory Committee for Starting Dot for all matters pertaining to “.bio”. The association intends to register itself as IFOAM.bio in the coming weeks and encourages everyone in the organic movement to also adopt this new top-level domain.
