Egypt: 37 years of Sekem

by Redaktion (comments: 0)

The Demeter movement is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year - and Sekem joins the festivities. The Sekem initiative, being the leading Egyptian Demeter producer and original biodynamic pioneer in North Africa, is celebrating its own 37 years of existence and pioneering work in 2014.

Sekem and Demeter have come a long way during the past decades in many parts of the world. In the largest Egyptian supermarkets, organic corners are as well-established as in Germany, Austria or Switzerland, Sekem reports. The profound societal changes this development required, however, may be easily overlooked: the question of how food is produced has become a much more urgent one in Egypt, too. The challenges that may lie along the path of the organic food movement will be the topic of a lecture by Helmy Abouleish, managing director at Sekem, at BioFach 2014

The latest edition of Sekem Insight  is available now. It provides information on culture, economy, society and ecology in Egypt. The journal is available here: Sekem Insight January/ February 2014 edition.
