Interview with the Sugarman of Brazil

by Redaktion (comments: 0)

Global Organics, a leading supplier of certified organic ingredients, has announced the broadcast of an interview with Leontino Balbo Jr. (53), their partner and founder of the Native Green Cane Project. The BBC 4 radio interview highlights Leontino’s mission to radically change the way sugar is produced. It gives insight to the challenges Leontino faced while creating organic and sustainable farming in an industry dominated by big multinationals and chemical companies. The 10 November 2013 interview “The Sugarman of Brazil” can be heard at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/. (Picture: Leontino Balbo Jr. in his sugar cane field)

The conventional sugar industry has long been known for the damage it does to the environment, from loss of biodiversity to heavy use of agrichemicals. Leontino’s lifelong goal of working in concert with nature to create a truly sustainable production model has succeeded beyond his wildest dreams. Balbo’s Green Cane Project proves that large-scale agricultural projects can have high crop yields without the use of chemicals and pesticides and return life to the soil and biodiversity to farms and surrounding areas. His three mills in Southern Brazil produce 6 million tons of sugar cane each year.
