Denmark: 500 catering and gastronomic facilities now carry organic food logo

The choice of organic places to eat at in Denmark is constantly growing: 500 cafeterias, restaurants, public kitchens and similar locations now carry the organic food logo in gold, silver or bronze. The list is still dominated by canteens and institutions such as kindergartens and nurseries, but within the last six months, it has also been extended with the first hospital kitchen and the first Michelin-star restaurant.

"The government has a target that 60% of the food that is being served in public kitchens must be organic in 2020, and it will certainly mean that the number of public kitchens that carry the organic food logo will continue to grow in the coming years," explains Dorthe Kloppenborg, Project Manager at Organic Denmark.

The retiring home Højdevang Sogns in Copenhagen is one of the locations that has recently earned the organic food logo. The retiring home has been focusing on ecology for several years, and in May it was awarded the organic food logo in silver. "It has given us extra motivation to get a concrete proof of where our efforts are going", says manager Marianne Hansen (see picture by Brian Berg, Københavns Madhus), who points out that a lot of workflows have been changed to reach the high ecology percentage. "On the vegetable front, for example, we went from frozen to fresh produce, which takes more time and more hands. But it also means that professionalism has come much more into focus, and it helps to make our work more exciting."

273 locations carry the organic food logo in bronze (30-60% organic)
157 locations have a silver label (60-90%)
70 eateries carry a gold label (90-100% organic)
