Denmark: Organic stalls at Roskilde festival

by Redaktion (comments: 0)

This year's Roskilde Festival, the largest culture and music festival in Northern Europe, has taken place from 29 June to 7 July 2013. For the first time, seven food stalls were present displaying the organic food logo in gold, silver and bronze, which demonstrates the share of organic ingredients in the meals and snacks they sold. It has only become possible recently to use the organic food logo for temporary stalls at events like festivals and markets. The stalls at the festival have all been allowed to display this logo, which was previously reserved for permanent eateries as canteens and restaurants.

There are strict requirements for applicants: the assessment of whether temporary stalls can be approved for the logo includes documentation of the purchased items, as one example. “We have worked intensively to get food stands approved, and I think there is room for many more organic certified food stalls at future festivals”, the project manager at the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, Danish Veterinary and Food Administration, Robert Lind, said prior to the festival, and pointed out that the authority also monitors the stalls along the way at the festival, so there is no compromise on the credibility of organics.

The organisers of the Roskilde Festival have been an important partner for the authority in the development of the logo for events. In addition, the Roskilde Festival made it a target for the festival in 2013 that all the festival food and drink outlets use at least 30% organic ingredients.
