Organic projects in East Africa

by Redaktion (comments: 0)

Organic Denmark has just been granted DKK3.3m (about 440,000 euros) of CISU (Civil Society in Development) funding for two ecological projects in Tanzania and Uganda. Both projects will run over two years. Per Rasmussen, international consultant of Organic Denmark, says it is a huge encouragement that the last several months of work now translated into two specific projects that help people. It is the first time that funding for larger project was awarded, according to Per Rasmussen. (Picture: farmers on Zanzibar, Tanzania).

The project partner for Uganda is the National Organic Agriculture Movement of Uganda, NOGAMU, and four additional new organisations are included that want to introduce the so-called Farmer Family Learning Groups (FFLG) as a method to develop agriculture. FFLG is based on the principles of the Danish ecologists farm schools. 500 farming families in Uganda are organised in the project with the first activities starting in late summer. It will be the first time that Organic Denmark implements an organic project in Tanzania. This is done in close partnership with the Tanzania Organic Agriculture Movement, TOAM, and local vegetable producers from the agricultural organization UWAMWIMA on Zanzibar.
