Tales of Organics in Finland

Tales of Organics in Finland is a photography book telling stories about the people behind organics on farms, in businesses and in the organic movement and organic industry altogether. The authors are Erkki Pöytäniemi and Marja Nuora, with Erkki responsible for the photography and Marja for writing. (Picture by Erkki Pöytäniemi)
 

In 2011, the authors felt that no-one was telling the authentic stories of organics and the people behind it. They have been traveling around Finland for two years, visiting pioneering farmers they already know from the 1980's and meeting many new people - some of whom have started organics recently. So far, Erkki and Marja have visited and photographed 30 locations in different parts of Finland - the northern-most point in Lapland at the latitude of 66 degrees north. Finland is the northern-most country in the world to be self-sufficient in basic food stuff.
 

In the book, stories are told about the diversity of organics from field to fork and the different dimensions related to organics: taking care of the living soil, biodiversity, animals on organic farms and landscape, but of course especially the people. The photography style is photojournalistic and the aim is to give an authentic view of organics in Finland from different angles.

Both Erkki and Marja have done their careers in the organic food business and know organics in and out. Erkki has a Master of Science degree in Agronomy and Marja has a Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy and a Master’s degree in Arts (Philosophy). She has 20 years of experience in organics and has written several articles and reports about organic farming, food and industry. The authors are entrepreneurs active in organic business, communication and projects (Organic Food Finland). Erkki has been an active amateur photographer and photo enthusiast for years.

Tales of Organics in Finland will be 280 x 230 mm, hardback and have roughly 200 pages. It will be published in Finnish and probably in English. Swedish and Russian are also considered for publication if there is sufficient interest. The book will be professionally translated. Advance sales of the book have already started. Advance orders receive a discount and some other benefits and support the chance to ensure that it will also be printed in English. The book can be used as a gift (private or business) or as coffee-table book or for anyone interested in organics and / or Finland.
