Italy: Fairtrade sales on the rise

Sales of Fairtrade certified products in Italy were worth 57,5 million euros in 2011, a plus of 8 million euros or 16.5 % on 2010. In 2002, fairtrade sales were worth 12 million euros. 54 % of the value of Fairtrade products was also certified organic, with a net increase of 16 % in value on 2010. Among the organic products with the best results were tea (+ 83 %), as well as biscuits and other snacks (+ 91 %).
 

Fairtrade certified bananas increased by 47 %. Roses are also increasing on a steady basis - in 2011 turnover grew by 54 % on 2010 (2009 to 2010: 60 %), Greenplanet reports. Fairtrade yoghurt and ice cream have been introduced recently. Sales of those products grew by 450 %, but from a very small basis. (Picture: Fairtrade at BioFach)
