USA: Horizon Organic's HOPE Award

by Redaktion (comments: 0)

Horizon Organic announced the winners of the 2010 HOPE (Horizon Organic Producer Education) award. It recognizes farmers creating positive change in their communities by practicing and serving as a model for organic agriculture, Natural Products Marketplace reports. The HOPE Award was handed out during Farm Aid’s 25th anniversary concert. The annual event is to promote the importance of family farming, as well as to raise awareness about economic, environmental and health challenges. Horizon Organic has been a major sponsor of Farm Aid since 2004 and founded the HOPE Award five years ago.

Harvey and Connie Frasier received this year’s award for their sustainable farming practices and dedication to promoting organic agriculture in their community. The Frasiers, who are fourth generation farmers, transitioned from conventional to organic farming about ten years ago and ran only the second organic farm in New York’s Herkimer County. They have since helped many other local farmers with transition from conventional to organic farming and host regular tours on their farm, which features an environmentally-friendly, low-electricity barn, for local farmers and school children.
