Canada: Loblaw supports sustainable fishing

The Canadian grocery chain Loblaw has cleared the seafood sections at some of its stores  to support sustainable fishing - empty trays demonstrate the removal of fish which the chain formerly sold that were at risk, International Supermarket News reports. If a sustainable source can be found, trays will be re-stocked. According to Dr. Jeffrey Hutchings, Professor of Biology, Canada Research Chair in Marine Conservation & Biodiversity at Dalhousie University and advisor to Loblaw, research shows that a lot of the fish and seafood eaten seriously depleted because of overfishing and other unsustainable fishing practices.
 

Canada was the country with the longest coastline in the world and the rich heritage in fishing extended back more than 500 years, Dr. Hutchings continued. As Canadians, they could not afford to ignore collective responsibility to recover the health of what lived in the oceans. Gerald Butts, President and CEO of WWF Canada, added that they were excited to be working with Loblaw to help them achieve their goal of 100 % sustainable seafood by 2013. Loblaw were showing globally significant leadership on this critical issue.
