UK: Tesco has received Carbon Trust Standard

by Redaktion (comments: 0)

The UK's largest supermarket chain Tesco (picture) have received the Carbon Trust Standard. This standard is given to companies that pass rigorous, independent investigation into their cutting of carbon footprint and reducing their direct impact on climate change, International Supermarket News reports. To receive this symbol, a reduction in annual carbon emissions is necessary. Tesco has made absolute reductions in carbon emissions, and reductions on the Carbon Trust Standard’s intensity measure, which recognises environmentally-efficient business growth.

Lucy Neville-Rolfe, executive director at Tesco, stated that gaining the Carbon Trust Standard was incredibly important because it confirmed that they were delivering on their ambitious plans to fight climate change as a successful, growing business. Tesco’s commitment to cutting our carbon footprint – among other key environmental targets – was central to their business strategy.  Tesco has also unveiled plans to build the world’s first zero-carbon store in Cambridgeshire this year. The store will even sell energy, which will be generated by an on-site plant. Tesco will also trial electric car charging points in some of the stores. The Sunday Times has ranked Tesco as the 15th greenest company in the UK and as the greenest supermarket.
