France: Label „raised without GMOs“ in discussion

by Redaktion (comments: 0)

The National Council of Consumption (CNC) in France might support the creation of a label "raised without GMOs", which could be attached to certain consumer products, according to information of Radio Europe 1. Following a meeting at the Ministry of Finance on April 3, which was held by representatives of "Que choisir" and the food industry, this label might be attached to animal products like meat, dairy products, fish, etc. that, until now, were not subject to mandatory labelling.

So far it is not clear for consumers to see whether the animals were raised on feed containing GMOs or not. The label would, at least, allow consumers to make their own choice. Others see it as a manifestation of the consolidation of the contamination threshold, currently set at 0.9%. The announcement was made while AFSSA (French Agency of Health Security of Food) has questioned the validity of a study on the harmful effects on reproduction of mice fed on genetically modified maize MON810, which was conducted in Austria.

The next meeting on this subject will be held at CNC on April 30. It will be preceded by a meeting of the GMO Committee of CNAB (National Organic Agriculture Committee) within the INAO (National Institute of Originality and Quality).
