The Agri-Environment Handbook for Turkey

by Redaktion (comments: 0)

The English version of the “The Agri-Environment Handbook for Turkey” has recently been published as an output of the project “Supporting the Development of a National Agri-environment Programme for Turkey”. This handbook is initially published in English and is in the process of being translated into Turkish. It was written by Mark Redman and Melike Hemmami, plus ten contributing authors and the support of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. It presents many of the key outputs, recommendations and accumulated expertise from the project.

Special reference is made to the project working group which included key stakeholders that will be closely linked to the future implementation of agri-environment policy in Turkey. It is intended as reference document to support the future programming of Turkish agri-environment measures, with particular reference to the opportunities and obligations associated with EU co-financing during the pre-accession period. Special attention is also given to introducing the concept of High Nature Value (HNV) farming and the biodiversity benefits associated with using agri-environment (and other rural development) measures to maintain the low intensity farming systems typically found in Turkey.

The handbook contains the seven main sections: introduction – an overview of the project, agriculture and the environment in Turkey, High Nature Value Farming in the European Union, High Nature Value Farming in Turkey, agri-environment policy-making in Europe, developing a national agri-environment programme for Turkey, and implementation of agri-environment schemes.
