Italy: Tutto Bio 2009 published

This year’s edition of Tutto Bio has just been published. It includes the new report on the organic sector in Italy. Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany have confirmed their leading role in the country. Direct sales dominate the national scene of organics. In the fifteenth edition of Tutto Bio, 7,000 operators in Italy are listed. It also includes the Bio Card which enables the owner to receive a discount of 10 % at 614 Italian companies - like at restaurants, at farm gate sales and in stores. Various articles feature this year’s subject: “Bio, Ecological, Ethnical: To have or to be?”.
 

Between 2006 and 2008, the organic sector in Italy has experienced a further growth: 1.943 companies with direct sales (+ 47 % from 1.324) were registered, 1.178 agriturisms (+ 40 % from 839), 208 organic farmers’ markets (+ 8 % from193), 479 purchasing groups (+ 66 % from 288), 1.114 stores (+ 2 % from 1.094), 791 school cafeterias (+ 20 % from 658) and 110 organic e-commerce sites (from 79 in 2006). Furthermore, 11 own label products of supermarkets, 6 on-line supermarkets, 360 restaurants, 16 catering companies, 100 Fair trade companies, 15 control bodies for organic products, 6 control bodies for cosmetics, 132 associations for organic products, 33 organic fairs and 177 books and regular publications are listed in the yearbook.
